Advanced Clinical Electrocardiography

Seminar Overview: 

A strong conceptual framework will be used to explore the major ECG abnormalities and how they vary when complicated by additional cardiac disease. The format will be to establish the normal appearance of the major abnormalities and then demonstrate ECG variation from these norms when additional abnormalities occur. For example, the normal appearance of Right Bundle Branch Block is established, then ECGs are worked through with RBBB plus ischaemia, infarct, hemiblocks, pericarditis, ventricular hypertrophy.
Topics include: Hypertrophy and Infarction – the normal hypertrophic and infarction patterns, cardiomyopathies, AMI (new and old, new on old), the less obvious infarct, acute and chronic cor pulmonale; Disorders of Conduction – Bundle Branch Blocks, The Hemiblocks, The Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, VT vs aberrancy; Disorders of Heart Position – dextrocardia, mesocardia and Metabolic Abnormalities - electrolyte imbalance, drug effects and overdose.

Legal Issues in Midwifery

Seminar Overview: 

Amelda Langslow has designed this workshop to minimize the risk of midwives becoming involved in the legal process.
The workshop is case – based and will examine: the legal and professional practice issues from admission of the mother through to discharge of the mother and baby, including: Consent; Duty of care issues (pre-admission advice, competency; supervision; equipment; pain relief; emergency delivery; neurological injury; infection; postpartum; lactation/co-sleeping/bed-sharing; resuscitation; transfer to neonatal/community care.) Communication, documentation and the safe management of medication are continuing themes.
At the conclusion of this workshop midwives will have a comprehensive list of warning signals to
assist in risk management & safe practice in their hospital.
